Family: Her father was a moulder at Cadbury Bros. and Secretary of the union branch in the 1930s. She has one sister. Married David in 1953. 8 Grandchildren
Work: in 1941 she won a scholarship to Redditch County High School.
She left school at 15 and worked in offices until forced to leave upon marriage in 1953. She then did voluntary work, mostly committees, while raising 3 children and fostering a gifted/maladjusted teenager. She gained two A levels at evening classes and was active in local politics including the Ratepayers Association, as a Parish Councillor etc.
In 1970 she studied for and gained an Open University BA (1st class honours) Arts/ Education/ Social Science.

1977-78 Aston University Diploma in Counselling in Education (FE & HE)
